There are times in life when reality puts a mirror in front of your face and makes you count your blessings. Today was one of those days. In particular it was the gallery put up on flickr.com by Eric Snowdeal...
The gallery shows the progress his son Eric Junior is making in after being born a bit too early in the hospital. Very touching, let's all root for the little brave fellow (and his family)...

Not quite black and white

Now that I have my new camera I also started playing around with Adobe Photshop again. I did some experiments with masking, cutting out a selection of a color picture, copying it, then setting the image mode to greyscale and back to RGB and then copying back the colored bits. I am pretty pleased with the results (as selction the portion of the picture you want to remain in color is a nifty bit of work).

My new play thingie

I have been shooting pictures with a HP 935 for well over a year now, and although it is a nice little camera (and easy to take with you) I was starting to feel its limitations, so after long consideration I finally took the big step to the camera that had been smiling at me from the shop window.

YES! I am now the proud owner of a Canon EOS300D, a digital SRL!

History of Het Amsteltje

My local bar has been around for a long time. Saturday my local newspaper ran a story on the bar that was there before het Amsteltje. It was called Marcel, and some of the names mentioned in the article are still visiting there. Fortunately some of them are quite a bit older and wiser by now :).

Chess anyone?

A hilarious little chess game from the dawn of the computer era:)

It's a game of chess played via notes messenger (our internal system at ACD), basically sending a move on an ascii board, copying the board into a new note, adjusting it for a move and then firing it back.

Last Thursday I went to the opening of the North Sea Jazz Festival at the Plein in The Hague. One of my favourite musicians, Michael Franti, was performing there. I esspecially liked his new song "Bomb the World".

We can bomb the world to pieces,
But we can't bomb it into peace.

The Armstrongs of wife-carrying

Two Estonian students clinched the country's seventh straight wife-carrying world championship on Saturday, winning the "wife's" weight in beer and a sauna.
Using the "Estonian Carry," where the woman clamps her thighs to the sides of the man's face while hanging upside down on his back, Madis Uusorg carried Inga Klauso 830 feet through a pool and over hurdles in just over a minute.
Uusorg, 20, claimed there was no secret to their victory. "I just tried to run and not think about anything," he said.
"Madis is very good at carrying women. I didn't have to do anything," his friend Klauso, 19, said. Contestants to not have to be married.

Americans DO have a sense of humor...

Read the washing instructions in French (the bag was made by Americans for the French market), by clicking on the image. Hilarious!

I had to share this find. I recently purchased a high-quality computer sleeve from a small boutique manufacturer. I was checking if it could be washed. The photo is the attached tag with the washing instructions in both English and French. The English is exactly what you would expect and so is the French, for the first 6 lines. The last three lines of French are most interesting. "We are sorry that our President is an idiot. We didn't vote for him." Given recent strained relations between our two countries, it's good to see that not all Americans agree with the current administration.
